In the meantime...I just received two DVDs of movies I saw recently: An Inconvenient Truth and Who Killed the Electric Car?...two movies that are must sees for anyone with the remotest interest in not destroying the Earth as we know it. I rushed from work to the residential side of campus, carried the hefty box to my room, and hesitantly bid the box farewell until I could return from the 4:30pm CIAS Honors dinner. Ever since then, I have been configuring my new Mac Pro, transferring data, and testing its incredible speed. This is quite a step up from my 1GHz PowerBook G4. The good news is that I am currently working with two sets of photos that should eventually make it to the website. If anyone has questions about the computer, feel free to ask.

Well, I can finally say that my Mac Pro is on its way to me and will arrive in 2 to 3 days!! It's about time considering I ordered it on August 8th. In the meantime, I have been at RIT since this past Wednesday acting as an orientation mentor to the new freshman in the Honors program. You'll have to wait until later for the photos I took during our camp retreat…I want to wait for my Mac Pro to test a new photo workflow. Be sure to read on to hear about the runaround Apple made me go through to get this computer.

So, all during Steve Jobs's keynote Monday, August 8th, I checked live weblog feeds to hear the latest announcements. That afternoon after I got home from work, I watched the streaming video Apple posted online by around 4:00pm. The announcements had me drooling. I was hoping for a new MacBook Pro with Core 2 Duo processors (unlikely since laptops with that new "Merom" processor are just being announced now…almost three weeks later). Instead, Jobs announced the new Mac Pro with Xeon processors (codenamed "Woodcrest" and based on the Core 2 Duo architecture).

I found myself addicted to reading every specification and early appraisal of the system as I continuously rearranged the configure-to-order options on Apple's store to find the perfect fit for me. Shortly, I began questioning whether I really needed to upgrade my laptop, or if an extremely powerful, new desktop would better serve my needs. I kept pondering this question and evaluating every potential issue that would arise from keeping my 1GHz PowerBook G4 in active use for at least another year (it's already over 2 and a half years old). Needless to say, I decided to order the Mac Pro.

Now begins the story of getting the stuff to me. Since I was due for an upgrade from my third generation iPod and my printer that just wasn't cutting it for photo quality, I opted in for the student iPod+Mac rebate and the printer+Mac rebate. Get this, my order went in at around 11:30pm that Monday and the iPod and printer arrived as I pulled into the driveway at home around 4:00pm Wednesday. That's only about 41 hours for processing and delivery with free shipping! Way to go Apple and FedEx!

Unfortunately, the story of the Mac Pro has not gone nearly that well. I was originally slated for the Mac Pro to be in FedEx's hands within 3 to 5 days from the purchase date since I did not order the AirPort card or higher end ATI graphics card that instantly guaranteed a 3 to 5 week shipping time. Sometime overnight on the day Apple estimated for the ship date (Aug 14th) they pushed it back to August 22nd (the day we were going to leave for Rochester). I half expected this, so the apologetic email from Apple wasn't too bad of a let down.

The next day I called Apple to change the shipping address from my home address to my RIT address. I figured this would save packing space in the car and would give me less to worry about before leaving for Rochester. Unfortunately, the Apple representative informed me that the computer was already in the 'prepare to ship phase,' and they could not change the address. I explained the issue that the house would be empty for a week during which the computer would likely be delivered. None of my pleading had any effect.

Eventually I the rep said that the best they could do was this: I should wait to hear that the computer shipped, then call Apple again, Apple will call FedEx, FedEx will return the computer to Apple, Apple will reship the computer shortly to the RIT address. That hardly pleased me as an efficient solution, but I saw no better option. A couple days later (Aug 17th), to my surprise, Apple said the Mac Pro had shipped. I became hopeful that the computer just might make it to me before I left for RIT.

By Friday afternoon, the FedEx tracking data finally worked, but the box was still sitting in its original sorting facility in California. Not willing to take a chance I called Apple to start the suggested process. While on the phone, the rep put me on hold and called FedEx while I waited. She came back and said the computer should be back in Apple's hands by the following Tuesday (Aug 22nd), and they would ship it quickly to RIT after that. This made me feel a bit better and I began concentrating on wrapping up a few things and packing before we had to depart in a few days.

I became anxious when the FedEx tracking data had not updated in a few days, but I thought this normal since I had supposedly stopped the shipment. The end of my first day at RIT, however, brought some troubling news. The FedEx tracking said the computer had gone through a Hagerstown, Maryland facility. The next day, my fears were confirmed and FedEx showed the package had been delivered…that is, a $2700 computer in a sexy Apple box was sitting on our front porch with no one at home to welcome it.

Luckily, our neighbor was able to bring the box indoors since she was taking care of our cats. At this point, though, I was infuriated with both Apple and FedEx for so royally screwing up this shipment. This prompted my third call to Apple Sales Support. I wanted two things: an answer to why FedEx did not return the box to Apple, and compensation for the shipping someone would have to pay to get this to me (remember, this was supposed to be free shipping from the online Apple Store). After a long converation with an Apple rep, I received neither of these. She was completely unable to figure out why this happened and could do nothing to help me get this 65 pound box from Virginia to Rochester, NY.

By that time I had had enough. I informed the rep that I was disappointed that she could be of no help to me and requested she send a message so that this case would be examined to improve future customer experiences. With that, I resigned myself to waiting until my parents returned home to ship the Mac Pro Monday, August 28th (that would be today).

I'm tired of all this ranting. It's time for a good night's rest amid bundles of anticipation for the box that is on its way!!

The upgrade to Fedora Core 5 on the router computer went pretty much flawlessly, except for problems I anticipated. The main slowdown came after the actual system upgrade that is applied by booting from the FC5 installation media was finished. More on that in the full post. My main interest now is what Steve Jobs will announce tomorrow at his keynote (10am PST) to kick off Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2006. I hope he has some impressive things waiting. I'm sure I'll comment on that when I know more.

Now for more about the FC5 upgrade…After booting into the newly upgraded system, it is best to update all packages and applications on the system to their newest versions. Using yum (the default package manager in FC5) this can be a slow process. The part that really slows things down, however, is removing the kernel-devel packages used by the old Fedora Core 4 system. These packages allow you to build kernel modules that serve lower-level purposes than most user-level applications. Removing these packages, for some reason, takes a heck of a lot of effort…too much for yum on that computer. I first ran into this issue some months ago when I upgraded the webserver computer. That computer, quite impressively, first ran on Fedora Core 2. I have successfully upgraded it with each FC revision since without needing to perform a clean install. It would be nice if the Fedora Core could be upgraded without booting from a CD as is the case with apt-get based distributions.

Anyway, yum runs what it calls a transaction test before attempting to actually remove the old kernel-devel packages. This makes sure the impending changes will not break the system. Unfortunately, this test puts the computer under a great amount of stress (system loads around 20.0 in my experience). Due to lack of memory, processor power, or who knows what, the test for all intensive purposes freezes the computer. To solve this, I remove the old kernel-devel packages in small batches of three or so using the rpm -e command. This does not perform such a transaction test and actually succeeds after a decent amount of time. After I removed all the old kernel-devel packages, the normal yum update to update the rest of the packages progresses normally. After a last reboot, things were finished.

You may remember my story from April about the RIT Juggle-In and how I won a set of juggling clubs. At that time I was taking a juggling class at RIT. This past week, I finally ordered myself four juggling bean bags (ie, vinyl material filled with birdseed...referred to as balls from here on) to diminish my juggling withdrawal. For those interested, I ordered the balls from Renegade at a reasonable price for the quality. You may also notice that I ordered decently large balls that feel more comfortable in my hand than normal smaller sizes. I often find myself casually juggling three balls while working on something else. See the second photo in the full post.

You may remember my story from April about the RIT Juggle-In and how I won a set of juggling clubs. At that time I was taking a juggling class at RIT. This past week, I finally ordered myself four juggling bean bags (ie, vinyl material filled with birdseed…referred to as balls from here on) to diminish my juggling withdrawal. For those interested, I ordered the balls from Renegade at a reasonable price for the quality.
Friday after work, my mom and I began a bit of a road trip in a rented SUV to pick up two of my cousins and grandfather in West Virginia. This was really my first chance to test my new Palm Treo 700p on the road with its unlimited data plan from Sprint. I have gotten great reception the whole way along major interstates (I-64 and 460 mostly). This has enabled me to browse the web, check my email, and simply entertain myself without having to worry where I will be able to pick up a wireless connection next with my laptop. I'm loving my experience with the 700p so far (except for a few issues getting the right plan from Sprint). By the way, I find it quite surprising (and telling of where our world is heading) that I can see five wireless networks from grandfather's house in this small West Virginian town. Two of those are not password protected...that is, anyone could connect to them and use the Internet.

It has been quite some time since my last post, and I could no longer stand it :). I have been home from Rochester for a couple weeks now, and all is well. This weekend my grandmother, aunt, and cousin are visiting and attending the Norfolk Harborfest festivities. I have been doing a bunch of computer maintenance around the house since I have been home. More recently I have been applying some extensive updates to the Linux servers since Thursday night's thunderstorm ended their stretch of uptime. One had not been rebooted for more than 180 days! More news to come...

For those of you wondering...I am still at RIT. It is finals week for the spring quarter. Two exams down, and two to go. I am getting really anxious to get home! Many things await me: a haircut, Mom, Dad, the animals, going to the Sprint store to check out the about-to-be-released Treo 700p, catching up with friends, putting off buying a MacBook Pro, checking up on my Linux servers, and a bunch of other fun stuff :). Every day more people around here leave because their exams are finished, but I got stuck with a Friday exam this time. Oh well, I'll be home before I know it!

I just got an email in my inbox today announcing that Skype is offering free calls to mobile and land phones in the US and Canada for the rest of the year. I doubt this would have happened anytime soon if eBay had not acquired Skype and given them a few extra funds with which to work. Like eBay probably wants me to, I am going to use this opportunity to encourage you all to download Skype, set up a Skype name, and add me (epkphoto) to your contact list. Feel free to try out the service by giving me a call (if I'm online) or by calling someone you usually call with a standard phone. This is a big move for Skype, and the other services, like the Gizmo Project, better watch out.

Finally some Mac advertising from Apple

Ever since I switched to using a Mac as my primary computer over two years ago, I have been waiting to see Apple actually advertise the product that defines them. In the wake of the iPod, mainstream advertising for the Mac has dwindled to nothing...until now! Apple has replaced its switch site with http://www.apple.com/getamac/. They have also placed 6 video advertisements online for your viewing pleasure :). It really is nice to finally see Apple acknowledging the Macintosh (operating system and computer) as a product worthy of advertising now that they are well into the transition to Intel processors and are able to boot Windows. I do believe, however that Apple is still suffering from the "good for graphics, but not for business" stereotype. Apple needs to challenge Microsoft by placing more ad dollars toward their server and storage solutions. I think this just might come when the Xserve gets an Intel processor.
