Upcoming Linux distribution updates

January 28th, 2007

I have been trying out the latest test release of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn (Linux) in a Parallels virtual machine. It is currently at the alpha 2 (v7.04) phase of the Feisty Fawn release that is set to be finished and available by April 19th. I do say that one feature that really catches my eye is the new "Control Center" that consolidates a lot of preference and admin functions of the computer, similar to SUSE's YaST. This is a much needed organizational upgrade. I am a bit more excited about the planned features for Fedora's upcoming v7 release on April 26th.

Where was all this snow last year?

January 24th, 2007

I've been waiting a while to post this in hopes that the weather would get better…but it doesn't seem likely. For the past week and a half, there has been nothing but snow and cold temperatures in the forecast. It all started on Monday the 15th when a sudden overnight ice storm caused RIT to close for the day. That is huge since RIT has only missed something like two full days in the past 20 or so years. Ever since that Monday, it has snowed on a daily basis. It looks like the ground is going to be white for some time to come until spring arrives or we have some more freak high temperatures. Bundle up!

Google search traffic

January 14th, 2007

It is always interesting to see how people come across my website. A regular provider of visitors is Google. What has surprised me over the past two years is the regular stream of traffic coming from searches for photos of Fame – The Musical. When you search in Google, the reason is quite obvious: my website consistently ranks in the top 3 results for that search. Don't take my word for it, go to Google and search for fame photos or fame the musical photos. Even in Yahoo, I rank second for fame the musical photos. That just shows that it can pay off to post a wide variety of content online in hopes that you will hit a few niches attract more visitors. By the way, you can always view the original Fame photos.

Still waiting for winter

January 13th, 2007

Now that RIT classes have been back in session for the past week, I'm back to balancing class work, Honors work, ITS work, and job searching for a summer co-op. The first week back was a bit hectic, but now that things are under control, the rest of this quarter should go well. It certainly doesn't hurt that the Rochester winter is still being quite wimpy. We got an inch of snow last week, but that melted by the afternoon. The clouds are still overcast as always, though. That's all for now…don't be afraid to leave comments to any of these posts!
